Bimbo – Preferisco Morire
Dario Arnone
Italy, 2024, 4′
Music video for the song “Preferisco Morire” by Bimbo.
Cancer Alley
Pamela Falkenberg, Jack Cochran
U.S.A., 2023, 9′
Our newest collaboration with renowned poet Lucy English combines footage shot on location In Cancer Alley with images of nature, especially cypress groves, which are as fragile and as threatened as the Cancer Alley communities. The visuals are accompanied by a poem about what it is like to live in the small towns near the Mississippi River, between East Baton Rouge and New Orleans, which are now dominated by more than 200 chemical plants and oil refineries, sometimes literally located in residents’ back yards. The cypress trees can live for more than 1000 years, if they are not chopped down for cypress mulch or their habitat destroyed. Human lifespans are much shorter, but we may not survive as a species unless we stop living as if all that matters is today, and learn to think on the time scale of the trees.
Doris Makes Truffles
Demons Cry 2
Italy, 2024, 4′
“And it looks like blood, but it is not; instead, they are stripes in sound diagrams, synthetic landscapes merging into perceptual hideouts. An unsteady mannequin takes over. It moves in an epileptic dance and disappears behind a dramatic curtain of chromatic verticalisms.” This work was carried out using different techniques: video shooting, stop motion, vfx, 2D and 3D rendering, active interaction between music and video, sound design, music production. It is interesting to know that the polychrome waterfall that is almost a constant in the video department is nothing but a spectrogram that varies in shape and colour according to sound pulses.
Dream Machine Ballet
Pierre Ajavon
France, 2023, 4′
Like a bridge between two worlds, the user of the Dream Machine can see complex colour patterns appear, these patterns can become swirling shapes and symbols, until the user feels overwhelmed with colours. In “Dream Machine Ballet”, the rhythmic impulses of the music cause patterns, shapes and symbols of colours in movement, which emerge from the unconscious according to the different musical phases.
Overcome
Guli Silberstein
United Kingsom, 2023, 7′
Overcome contains a selection of AI works made over the course of a few months in 2023, in a unique hybrid stage of image-generation, in the uncanny valley of abstraction and realism, resulting in a unique animated look. The AI outputs are woven together into one story created using a combination of text-to-image, text-to-text, and text-to-voice machine-learning models. The central theme that emerged is the fascination, conflict, and relationship humans have with AI technology, and vice-versa.
Private Worlds
Myk Eff
Canada, 2023, 4′
“A vision of music and the metaverse. This is probably my most autobiographical music video, though it’s not intended to convey autobiography to viewers. A lot of my personal history as an artist inspired much of the imagery and sequencing, such as the idea of getting lost for endless days in workshops and studio spaces packed with gear which included audio tech of course but also tools for working with metal and wood. And of course, experiencing the pull into inner worlds of imagination. The video is a love embrace between digital and analog technology in the context of creativity and artistic experiences.”
The Day the World Went Away
Mélissa Faivre
Germany/France, 2023, 14′
A visual exploration of colours, kinetic landscapes and optical effects. An observation of nature through the vision of a macro world made of plants, insects, spider webs and debris. The ground crumbles in the crust of monochrome surfaces, the sea flies into infinite bits of pixels, the chameleon landscape suspends time.
The Entropy Of Truth
Jing Wang, Harvey Goldman
U.S.A., 2024, 6′
“What is… is what will not be… appearing, and then vanishing.” Impermanence, now permanent. The entropy of truth. The truth… of entropy. As we approach the singularity. Eerily slipping through the slender corridor of now. Entropy of Truth is a poetic work reflecting upon our search for “truth” while meandering through the universe on this stone we call earth. It is also a meditation on the “permanence of impermanence”. film narrative from the poem “Entropy of Truth” by Harvey Goldman The “visual music” collaborations of Jing Wang and Harvey Goldman attempt to produce a synesthesia like experience. The audience is encouraged to “see” the music and “hear” the visuals. The imagery and audio components are constructed without hierarchy, a true melding of sound and image.
The Prism
Jacopo Farina
Italy, 2023, 4′
There’s a cavern, a non-Platonic realm symbolizing an existential state, where a soul roams in pursuit of answers and the route to attain them. Guided by The Prism portal artworks and its words, she will ultimately arrive precisely where she is meant to: at the beginning of her journey.
The View from the Plane
Daniele Grosso
Portogallo/Italia, 2024, 6′
On the 24th of June, 1958 the philosopher and anti-nuclear activist Günther Anders was flying to Japan to take part in the Fourth World Conference Against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs and for Disarmament. He recollected this experience in his book “The Man on the Bridge: Diary from Hiroshima and Nagasaki”.
When The Hawk Comes
Lilia Li-Mi-Yan, Katherina Sadovsky
Armenia, 2023, 6′
A short video by artists Lilia Li-Mi-Yan (Yerevan) and Katherina Sadovsky (Moscow) is a sad, poetic metaphor for what is happening in the world today. The plot and melody of an Armenian lullaby are taken as a starting point, where a mother tries to calm her son by offering to make a symbolic choice of a destiny bird. The boy does not choose peaceful birds, nightingale, or magpie. His predictable choice is a warlike hawk. The horrors of war are resolutely put out of the brackets of this world without men. It is a gynaeceum, majestic, beautiful and frightening. Nineteen women of different ages wander in a string through the endless desert, re-mastering or forever saying goodbye to the space reminiscent of the fields of past battles. At times, the space collapses into a dark cave, a cramped stage area or a place for prayer. At these moments, the movement of women looks like a mysterious ritual. It seems necessary and meaningful. Under the alarmingly changing sound of the lullaby, the stones hang in the air, the predatory hawk turns into a drone and the expectation of catharsis increases. The audience, indeed, is brought close to him, and twice. At first, space explodes with a cataclysm, suggesting the fateful presence of higher forces, and later, the glow of sunset is too similar to a fatal explosion of human origin. And it becomes clear that in this story, there is not only a happy end, but there is no end – it is looped, as it should be at video screenings. Here, this usual technique takes on a new meaning and significance. The story begins from the beginning, and the viewer returns to the pile of female bodies that wake up from sleep or get up after death. Folklore motifs of a lullaby are filled with actual meanings, meditativeness – hidden despair.
